Reliving the Cactus Song
Yesterday, I received an email from a US based song writing and artist development company.
They’ve stated in the email that they were fond of one of my song series – The Cactus Song, which I have written last September on my 2nd month of blogging. They offered me a package into buying my lyrics but I have to pay an upfront. The company will then complete the lyrics with vocal and music to compile the song and do the advertising for me.
Though this is a brand new experience but I’m not sure why I felt uncertain about it. Perhaps I can take this opportunity to relive this song and recap my inspirations to my lover – the Cactus Song
I live in Texas my homeland, a desert an untouched ground
I love the sun being my clothes
And I love the sweet, warm breezy blows
With a grouchy cuckoo on my head
No autumn leaves or winter snow
No splashing stream or falling rain
Just an empty Paradise on my own,
With the rocks and stones.
I like to dance in the falling night,
With the cowboys dancing around
That is my homeland, a desert an untouched ground
I live in Singapore IKEA my homeland, a concrete desert ground
I love the air-conditioner being my jacket all year round
And I love the halogen light giving me a good shine
With a grocery shopper passer-by
No autumn leaves or winter snow
No splashing stream or falling rain
Just a perfect Paradise within my reign
With my color and little sands deco
I like to sing in my own shadow
With the shopper’s cajoling around,
This is Singapore IKEA my homeland, a concrete desert ground.

I love them. They are fantastic. Maybe it’s the upfront payment that makes you nervous? Would be absolutely wonderful if they made a song out of your beautiful writing though.

I’m ready confuse! Frankly, I got no deep pocket, and I’m totally new in this industry!

This could be a wonderful opportunity for you, Sydney. You are a talented man but most of all you have great compassion. I would wish only the best for you and I think that you would be wise to research this company which wants upfront funding.

You know internet can be all fake! I did but still uncertain! Sigh… I think is something to do with my character not the offer! 😦
April 6, 2013 at 12:34 am
Don’t be conned by their offer. As a rule, never pay anyone to buy your stuff. Think about that! Pay someone to buy from you. I know it’s tempting and flattering, but that’s part of the con game. Whatever you think of this advice, it’s free. 🙂
April 6, 2013 at 12:40 am
I find strange about this too! Is just like what you said, I had to buy back my own stuff! 😦
But on the other hand, they are very sincere to write up the invitation.
Thanks for your advice, you are right! Your words is free! 🙂

Be careful if they are asking for money. You may end up paying a lot of money and not getting a return on your investment. Your uneasiness with this opportunity should be a red flag for you. 🙂 Take Care….

Yes, I’m trying to figure out what troubling me, maybe you are right.
My instinct is telling me something.
Thanks, Bernice! Sydney hug, hug… 🙂

Whenever I do not listen to my instincts I typically regret the decision. I wish you the best! Bernice…. and hugs back to you! 🙂

My son is a songwriter and has people looking out for him – doing all the business stuff. You have to be very very careful…..I really would trust your gut feeling. You have such a pure spirit, and there are plenty of people out there who I fear would exploit that….

Hey, thank you for giving so much supports and compliments to me! You info is so precious and I can get insight of the picture.
I started to realize why I’m so uncertain…
May you and your families be well and happy! Cheers! 🙂

Sydney, I join the others who would warn you about people who want you to pay money up front. It’s a very common scenario for all sorts of writers, and every professional I’ve ever known has told me that those who want to use your words should be paying YOU, not the other way around! I think you are right to be uncertain. Nevertheless, I am happy this gave me a chance to view your lovely cactus post!

Thanks, Julia! This is one of the reason I feel strange, but on the other hand cause I’m new in this line, so I thought of maybe it practice in this way.
To what I know , song producer is no longer a good money business, at least it happens locally.
So by saying that, I thought this might become a trend.
And I feel is okay by paying people to do me a ‘test’. I mean let’s be reality, we all have to live and eat. Of course, some people like me don’t so much food! 😦
Thanks again, Julia! You words makes me feel so secure that I’m belong to the Blogging path.
Sydney wish you all the best and stay healthy in forever!
Have a good day! 🙂

Hi Sydney. I agree with others about being wary of anyone who asks you to pay them money up front to use your work.
April 6, 2013 at 8:50 am
Hi, Lusiana! Sydney thank you for your words and supports!
The pleasant moment with you all is my greatest gift! 🙂
April 6, 2013 at 8:44 am
I agree with the rest of your blogging friends. If you’re going to pay money up front, go find a good agent. But if someone is coming to you asking for you to pay money, don’t trust them! To get published, you do sometimes have to pay money for something you really want to publish. but you are already published – right here!! And we all enjoy it! 🙂

You are enlightening me, Marsha! I’m already here, why should I go somewhere where don’t belong to me?
And I own a garden, why should I be the gardener for others!
Thanks, Marsha! Sydney feel that sometime he think like a foolish kid… 😥

I hope you are enjoying a very nice weekend!
You know me from my Planting Happiness blog, however another side of my business is Entertainment and Special Events. I work for already 25 years in the entertainment industry with amongst others, live show production companies, special events as well as recording labels in the USA. Am glad to see that others already warned you for this con. Don’t pay anything! This is not the way business rolls in the entertainment industry when people are interested in your works. If you want to chat about it more, please feel free to send me an email offline: firstname.lastname@example.org. It will be my pleasure to answer all your questions (free of charge, no upfront payment hahaahahah ;-)).
Take care and have a good weekend my friend!

You are wise to avoid anything that seeks to take advantage of you and your pocketbook, preying on your vanity and inexperience–not that you are vain, of course, I just mean it can be appealing to have someone imply you are special. You are more or less a “cash cow” to them. You have a fine future, just keep on with your wonderful blog and stay cool. Warmly, Tasha
April 7, 2013 at 6:58 pm
Haha! I like the word “cash cow”!
Thank you so much for your inspired words!
